Teen Residential Therapy Program

When life becomes too overwhelming for your teenager, they may need more intensive care. They need a community that understands them and the space to reset and heal.

Psychiatric Intensive Outpatient

Teen Residential Program: Why Choose The Brook Hospitals?

Sometimes, short-term hospital stays or outpatient therapy aren’t enough for teenagers with a psychiatric illness, emotional disorder or substance use disorder.

The adolescent residential therapy program at The Brook Hospitals provides a stable foundation where teens ages 13 to 17 can find their footing. This residential treatment program is ideal for teens who need longer-term care than inpatient hospitalization provides or for those who’ve had multiple inpatient hospitalizations.

The teen residential program, which lasts four to five weeks, helps your adolescent find a path forward. Our program provides a landing spot for teens who need more time, consistency and intensive support than they can get in a traditional short-term inpatient program.

Highlights of the teen residential program include:

  • Teen mental health specialization: True healing requires providers who understand the complexities of teen mental health. Your teen’s providers include a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner, mental health therapists, nurses and other professionals. We start by listening and learning so we can meet each teen’s needs.
  • Trauma-informed approach to care: We know every teenager is more than a list of behaviors and that past experiences can significantly affect every aspect of a teen’s life. Our approach prioritizes physical and emotional comfort to help promote an environment where healing can begin.
  • Shared community growth and learning: An important part of working with teens is getting them to talk to each other, so they can listen and learn together. Group therapy helps us accomplish that. Therapists work with teens to help them have a positive and productive experience that promotes recovery.
  • Family atmosphere: Our staff is right there with teens, talking and interacting throughout the day. This constant connection helps make our space feel less like a health facility and more like a supportive home.
  • Academic support: Your teen’s academic progress continues during the residential program. Teens attend school several hours each day. Educators coordinate with your child’s home school and implement IEP and 504 requirements as needed.

A Typical Day in the Teen Residential Program

Teens in the residential program set goals, work through their challenges and find healing and growth. Days are full and highly structured with group therapy and other activities.

The residential program provides:

  • Comprehensive psychosocial assessment
  • Morning and evening community meetings
  • Therapeutic groups up to five times a day
  • Art therapy, physical activity and other activities
  • School on weekdays through the Jefferson County, Kentucky, school system
  • Medication management as needed

Family Involvement in Care

We believe families are an important part of healing for every teen. We keep families informed and involved in care through:

  • Input during treatment planning
  • Weekly family therapy meetings
  • Outreach to families during the week as needed to discuss changes to treatment plans
  • Visitation on weekends

Mental Health Conditions We Treat

Conditions we treat in teens include:

  • Aggression
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Self-harm
  • Substance use
  • Suicidal thoughts

Substance use residential treatment program

The Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Rehabilitation (S.T.A.R.) program is a residential treatment option for teens addicted to drugs or alcohol. Teens participating in S.T.A.R. stay in the residential program unit and attend specialized group therapy sessions geared toward their needs.

Planning for Your Child’s Next Steps

Your teen’s providers meet weekly to discuss the treatment plan and next steps. We also reassess goals as needed.

We recommend next steps for your child after discharge. Your child may step down to our teen intensive outpatient program (IOP) or our teen partial hospitalization program (PHP), or they may transition to standard outpatient therapy.
