Teen Intensive Outpatient Program: Why Choose The Brook Hospitals?

Sometimes weekly therapy isn’t enough for your teen, but a full-day program feels like too much. We have a solution to fit your needs.

The adolescent intensive outpatient program (IOP) at The Brook Hospitals offers structured virtual group therapy for teens ages 13 to 17 who need extra help managing a mental health issue or substance use disorder. Your teen gets the support they need while maintaining their school schedule and living at home.

We built the teen IOP for kids who need focused adolescent mental health treatment but can and want to maintain their academic and home routines.

Highlights of the teen IOP include:

  • Care from the comfort of home: Our IOPs are virtual. These online programs allow your teen to get high-quality clinical support from home, where they feel most at ease.
  • Focused support: Our IOP empowers your teenager to build resilience through skilled clinical support while also staying connected to their day-to-day life.
  • Shorter time commitment: The program’s schedule allows enough time for your teen to get the care they need while leaving space for school, homework and other activities.
  • Chemical dependency program option: We also offer an adolescent chemical dependency IOP for teens dealing with substance use disorder. This program follows a step-based recovery model with family involvement as needed and requires random drug screening.
  • Support transitioning your child’s care: We help you map out the next steps for your child, whether that’s moving to more intensive care with us or finding a community therapist. Additional teen programs we offer include our teen partial hospitalization program (PHP), teen inpatient program and teen residential program.

How the IOP for Teens Works

Teens attend three-hour virtual sessions, Monday to Friday, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. These virtual sessions help your child maintain their social and academic connections while focusing on their well-being.

The program provides:

  • Comprehensive psychosocial assessment
  • Group therapy
  • Family therapy

Therapists understand the unique needs of adolescents. They tailor discussions to the personalities and needs of the group. Discussion topics may include boundary setting, emotional resilience, relationships, social isolation, online safety and more.

Navigating virtual therapy sessions

Because the virtual IOP sessions take place at home, we ask for your partnership to create an environment that fosters growth.

To help your teen get the most out of each session, we request that they:

  • Participate from a quiet, private space, free from distractions
  • Be fully present and engaged in the conversation without other activities or devices
  • Remain upright and alert (not lying in bed)

We understand that every teen has different needs and abilities. A virtual setting requires focus. If you aren’t sure whether a virtual program is the appropriate choice for you, we can discuss strategies for success or explore other care options.
