Psychiatric Inpatient

Seniors Inpatient Program

The Brook Hospital – Dupont offers an inpatient unit devoted to the unique needs of older adults who are experiencing problems with psychiatric illness and/or emotional disorders. This program is designed to provide the highest level of direct patient care that is possible which includes physical, social, spiritual, medical and psychotherapeutic interventions.

This program also focuses on stabilizing exacerbated symptoms associated with dementia—such as depression, irritability, combativeness/aggression, non-compliance with medication or need to re-evaluate current medication regime.

Services include the following:

  • A secure milieu with 24-hour skilled nursing care
  • Psychiatric evaluation by a psychiatrist
  • Thorough assessment by a registered nurse and development of an initial treatment plan
  • Development of an individualized master treatment plan by a multidisciplinary team which is problem-oriented, goal-directed, contains measurable objectives and addresses criteria for discharge. This team includes a psychiatrist, registered nurse, social worker and activity therapist
  • Physical examination and intervention by a physician
  • Pharmacological interventions as indicated
  • Psychoeducational groups and individual sessions
  • Therapeutic groups that address the areas of increased ability to carry out Activities of Daily Living (ADLs); grief and loss, aging, health problems, depression, family issues, feelings, stress and problem-solving
  • Participation of family in treatment
  • Development of comprehensive discharge plan

Upon completion of the inpatient program, an appropriate referral is then made for the patient to continue treatment in the least restrictive level of care possible (i.e., partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, outpatient). The level of care recommended is determined by the individual needs of the patient.
