Adolescent Psychiatric Intensive Outpatient Program

The Brook Hospital – KMI offers a highly structured Intensive Outpatient Program for Adolescents (ages 13 to 17) who are experiencing a condition related to an acute psychiatric illness and/or emotional disorder. This program is designed to address the individual needs of these patients through specialized physical, social, spiritual, medical and psychotherapeutic treatment interventions.

The Intensive Outpatient Program Services include the following:

  • A secure milieu with skilled nursing care
  • Thorough assessment and monitoring by a registered psychiatric nurse and development of an initial treatment plan
  • Evaluation and crisis stabilization by a multi-disciplinary team (including a nurse, social worker) directed by a psychiatrist
  • Referral for pharmacological interventions as indicated
  • Development of a master treatment plan by a multidisciplinary team which is problem-oriented, goal-directed, contains measurable objectives and addresses criteria for discharge
  • Development of a comprehensive discharge plan
  • Psychoeducational and psychotherapy groups and family therapy
  • Therapeutic groups that address the areas of assertiveness, feelings, problem solving, grief resolution, life planning, stress, self-image, social skills, occupational and recreational therapy
  • Family participation in treatment including family therapy and individual therapy as indicated

The Intensive Outpatient Program is offered Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Following completion of the Intensive Outpatient Program, an appropriate referral will be made for the patient to continue treatment in the least restrictive level of care possible (i.e., outpatient, support group, etc.) The level of care recommended is determined by the individual needs of the patient.
